You Spin My Head Right Round…

This morning, my sister and I decided to do something new!

We took a spinning class at UCF!

Before I left for my 7:30 am class, I had a stabilizing breakfast. I used this container of pomegranate berry yogurt as the base of my meal.

I combined strawberries, yogurt, and a cup of Kashi Go Lean cereal:

My sister came along with me to my 7:30 am class since we were heading to the gym on campus for spinning. She found college classes β€œso boring” and is glad that she is in school to cut hair and not to become an engineer. We are such opposites!!

Brielle and I split a pumpkin pie Kashi bar on our 0.5 mile walk to the gym.

I haven’t used the on campus gym at UCF in over a year! I always use the one at my apartment, or lift weights at home. It’s quite a nice facility, which I obviously don’t take advantage of.

We got to the 10:15 am class a bit early to make sure we would get bikes. It was a nice surprise to see Sarah as our teacher!!

I really enjoyed doing something other than running. It was a nice change, and made me really miss my bicycle!!

Sarah did a great job of teaching the class. I felt like I was working hard, and working up a sweat. My sister also really liked it because her knees bother her when she tries to run.

As a freshman, I was SO intimidated by spinning classes. The great part about the spin class is you can tailor it to your needs. For example, if you find one of the positions or sprints hard, you can simply sit on the bike, turn it to lower resistance, and recover until you are ready to continue with the class. If it’s too easy, increase your cadence or the resistance on the bike.

I was absolutely STARVING when I got home. I whipped up the first thing that came to mind, a fruit and nut salad:

I combined:

  • spinach
  • melon
  • grapes
  • strawberries
  • walnuts
  • almonds
  • grilled chicken breast w/ basil and thyme

I topped it all with Trader Joes’ Poppyseed dressing!! I am so thankful that JasoNerd’s brother Zach brought me some more back from Ohio!! πŸ˜€

I might make pumpkin muffins. I have been thinking about them all day!!

I really love kickboxing! After the marathon, I can’t wait to get back into some fun stuff!

  1. OOOH i’d love to go spinning again! I move in two months and I’ll be definitely joining a new gym so I can start spinning again!

    I’m wondering about your pumpkins muffins; we don’t have canned pumpkin in Belgium; so when you used canned pumpkin for a recipe, I can never figure out how I can replace that with regular pumpkin: how much should I use, how should I prepare it…?

    • Here is an easy method for cooking fresh pumpkin and making your own puree: Original recipe yield: 4 to 6 cups

      INGREDIENTS 1 medium sugar pumpkin

      DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Cut pumpkin into small manageable pieces and cut off pith and seeds. Place cut pumpkin skin side up in a large roasting pan. Add 1/4 water and bake uncovered for 1 hour or until tender. Remove from oven and allow pumpkin to cool. When cooled, cut away skin and mash or puree. Use in any recipe that calls for canned pureed pumpkin.

      • oh damn… a “sugar” pumpkin..? I think we only have three kinds of pumpkins in Belgium, regular, butternut and then a green type which I’ve just discovered last week and have no idea what it is πŸ™‚

        but thanks, I’ll be trying it with the regular kind or the butternut πŸ™‚

  2. I LOVE spinning. It’s a great alternative to running. I also like to follow up a spin class with a short run some days rather than do a longer run!

    i love kickboxing too. i used to take a body pump class and then kickboxing right after (kicked me in the butt the first time i did it!) and i loved it but had to quit due to hip pain! so awesome tho!!

  7. that is so awesome that you have spinning at your school.. Im not going to lie .. im a little jealous .. My school only offer yoga .. but the only time is in the middle of the day when I have class!

    I love spinning (when I am home at my gym) .. I would love to try kickboxing!

  8. Spinning sounds like fun πŸ˜€ I’d like to give that a go sometime.
    I take a BodyPump class at the local gym. It’s an hour long, high intensity strength training class. It targets every single muscle group and is SO MUCH FUN!! It doesn’t even feel like you’re exercising, but it’s done AMAZING things for my biceps πŸ˜€

  9. Spinning is definitely my favorite group fitness class because I like the challenge and its fun! I haven’t done it for a while and i want to… I also love pilates!

  11. I am a spinning junkie!! I go 2-3 times a week. It’s a nice break from the monotomy of the other cardio equipment.

  13. I LOVE spinning! I injured my knee in high school cross country (the coach had me run 60 mile in the first week! Eek) and can’t run anymore. I am so lucky because spinning does not bother my knee at all so it’s a great alternative for me and the elliptical sure gets boring!

  14. I think spin classes would be my favorite group exercise, besides playing soccer of course!! I used to teach spinning a couple years ago and LOVED it!

  20. I’m a big fan of stepping. I use it as my cross training when im training for a half marathon. I find it very challenging, but also a lot of fun.
    I have tried spinning 2 times. the first time, i hated it. the second time, i loved it!!!!

  23. Kickboxing is my absolute favorite group class. I feel like it’s only of the only activities I do–with the exception of Pilates–that I don’t want to end when class finishes!

    Kickboxing is the next thing I want to learn!!! I’ve been looking at some classes around here, but it looks soooo cool and energizing πŸ™‚ I miss my bike too! Glad you were able to mix it up a bit and spend time with your sis at the same time!

  28. I’m obsessed with group exercise classes. Sweating it out with a whole room of people feels awesome! Spin and Pilates are my favorites, but I used to love kickboxing before my knee injuries. I hope you made those pumpkin muffins… Yum!!

  31. Funny, it took me a long time to muster up the courage to try the spinning class at my old campus gym too. Then I fell in love with it πŸ˜‰ I’m at a new schmancy gym now and love pretty much all their classes! Surprisingly I’m really into step. I always thought I was uncoordinated, but it is SO much fun!!!

  33. I LOVE spinning, especially when the music is great! Last week my instructor was blasting Paparazzi and telling us to “Do it for Lady Gaga!” Heaven!! I also really want to try a Zumba class but I’m scared! πŸ™‚

    I’m also super jealous that you’ll have a sister who can cut your hair!!!
