Hurts So Good.

Meet my new friend, the foam roller.

I’ve actually had it since Christmas, but have just started to use it! I took a few weeks… okay, months… off of running and have just started back. On Sunday night, I did a harder run than what I have typically been doing and I woke up Monday with really sore hamstrings.

At first, I was scared. Last summer, I pulled my hamstring and had to take a month off running. The pain on Monday felt really similar. YIKES! I’m just coming back into running, I don’t want to take yet another month off!

The remedy: I took a few days off, iced/applied heat, and foam rolled.

Boy, that thing HURTS… but it also feels GOOD! I have no idea how that works… but it does.

It’s been almost a week since my last run. I felt better this morning, so I went on an easy 3.0 mile run/walk. I walked about 10% of the time, and took two stretch breaks. It’s okay to walk!

I came back drenched with sweat and hopped in an ice cold shower. I’m not afraid of cold water. In fact, I love it.

I’m seriously obsessed with Kashi Heart to Heart cereal.

…and foam rolling.

Do you use a foam roller?

  1. I love foam rolling. Actually, I have a love hate relationship with it. Hurts so good! I really need to roll out my quads come to think of it…

  2. I tried to use a foam roller once at the gym in an empty group exercise room and I noticed someone looking in at me with a quizzical look. I was so embarassed (probably because I didn’t know what the heck I was doing) that I haven’t done it since… haha.

I think I need to foam roll at home in the future.

  3. I think we all have a love-hate relationship with the foam roller. I really hate it while I’m rolling, but do love the results…

  4. Once I start running again, I’m definitely investing in a foam roller!

  5. omg that foam roller looks amazing! that’s exactly what I need for my hamstrings once marathon training starts!

  6. i agree with everybody…its a love-hate relationship, but if you use it consistently, it will dramatically change your recovery!

  7. I totally use a foam roller, I hate it but I love it!!!!

  8. My legs are soooo sore from doing squats and lunges, maybe I should invest in a foam roller!

& I’m glad you say that it’s okay to walk 🙂 Sometimes reading lots of healthy living blogs can be overwhelming and skew a view of things!

  9. I have a love/hate relationship with my foam roller. I need to use it more often. It really works wonders!

  10. i use it on my back (love those “pops”) and on my legs when they are sore

  11. Hmm, I think I need to look into foam rolling. My hamstrings have been tight this week.

  12. I don’t own my own foam roller, but I use one at my gym when I’m there. I say the same thing, “hurts so good” when I’m foam rolling.

  13. I JUST bought a foam roller 2 days ago! I’ve used it once and it’s amazing on sore muscles. It doesn’t do much (in my opinion) to regular not-sore muscles though. What do you think about that? Yay form rollers!

  14. I use a regular foam roller, as well as a trigger point foam roller for areas where I need to a deeper roll. I have piriformis issues too so I use a medicine ball to roll my glutes on.

  15. I have those shorts! I think I get the “must not cry” tweet from last night… Man, try your IT bands, that’s real pain for ya. I ❤ my foam roller!

  16. I’ve never used one. In fact, I never heard of them until recently. They look neat, though.

  17. I really want a foam roller. I use “the stick” right now, but I feel like I could REALLY work my muscles out with a foam roller. Do you know how much they cost?

  18. I’ve never used a foam roller – like Megan@MemoBlog I use “the stick” and really like it so far. But I’ve always heard GREAT things about foam rollers. Perhaps it’s time to get one!

  19. Yes, I absolutely love my foam roller!!

  20. I love using my foam roller for my quads and hamstrings. However, I never have good experiences when I try to foam roll my IT bands! I am sore for days after!

  21. I swear that it was foam rolling that saved me. The IT band hurts like a B*TCH!!!!

  22. I’ve heard so much about foam rollers lately! I think it’s time to look into one!

  23. I’m coming back from a hamstring injury and am having good luck with the Galloway Method. I’m running 5 minutes and walking 1. Maybe it would work for yout too. 🙂
