Friday the 13.1

I ran a half marathon this morning!

This is the farthest I have run since December 2008 😀

I started my morning with a 5:00 am wake-up call, and a half a bagel with PB.

I met with Caitlin at 5:30 am to get our long runs in. She had 16.0 miles on the schedule, and I had 12.0. We figured running the first 12 together would make things go by faster!

(fake running, LOL)

Miles 0.0 thru 7.0 were run in the dark!

I made the mistake last time I ran 12.0 miles of waiting until after 10.0 miles to eat something. This time, I ate BEFORE I felt like I needed it, around 6.0, 8.5, and 11.0.

I tried these black cherry CLIF shot bloks which I really liked! The had caffeine in there which I think really helped!

Caitlin and I took about 4 mini breaks. We walked for a few seconds, Caitlin once had to tie her shoes, to stretch, etc. It’s okay to walk, stretch, whatever! I’m all about doing what feels best on long runs.

I had 12.0 miles on the marathon training plan, but I was feeling great! I decided to go ahead and run 13.1! I didn’t feel bad about running extra, because before my mini-shin-injury, 13 miles were on the schedule for this week.

I’m not sure how long it took to run 13.1 miles, because my Garmin got messed up (I talk about it in video 2). I’m guessing around 2:16:00!!

VLOGS

I have two vlogs for you!!!

1st Vlog: Caitlin stops to change her socks, and I get bored. Check out how sweaty we are!!! It’s 86 degrees at 7:00 am!!!

2nd Vlog: My thoughts after 13.1 miles.

I’m now home and blogging! 😀

When I first got home, my tummy wasn’t feeling BAD but I wasn’t hungry either. Chocolate milk was just what I was craving! It has plenty of protein (1.5 cups homemade chocolate milk = 165 calories,13g protein, and 23g sugar/carbs!) It’s a great recovery drink!

This is my “I’m so excited to drink chocolate milk!” face. LOL.

After my shower, loading videos, etc. I finally got hungry at 10:15 am or so.

I made my tropical oatmeal! This meal is SO filling, I love it.

IMG_0697

My bowl of goodness:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 1 TBL flax
  • coconut
  • pineapple
  • almonds
  • banana

WOW that’s a LOT of stuff!! Very worth the time it takes to make.

I hope you enjoy the VLOGS!! I was excited to make them 😀

Dead Gadgets

Someone PLEASE remind me to charge my electronic gadgets the night before I run. UGH!

This morning I set out on what was SUPPOSED to be a 7 mile run, according to my training plan. I was up till wee hours of the morning talking to Jason on the phone ( I reaaaaalllly miss him!) 😦 So I was super tired to begin with. I debated skipping the entire run, but knew I would regret it.

I stepped out the door with my phone in my pocket, iPod in my sports bra, and Garmin on my wrist. Everything was going fine, until my iPod died. LAME!! I was already 0.5 miles away, so turning back to take it home was not really sounding all that great.

Around 2.5 miles, the Garmin stopped working. It had warned me of its “Low battery” this morning but I shrugged it off and told myself it would make it.

I then took my phone out to see what time it was, so that I could at least keep track of my time. What do you know!? It was also dead. UGH…. lol not going so good this morning.

I turned around and headed back to my house, and I think I ended up totaling about 4 miles.

Once I got back, I made a quick breakfast of yogurt, granola, and a peach.

IMG_2990 My dad had some Bear Naked granola in the pantry that I tried out. It was very tasty but the serving size was only 1/4 cup, which seemed miniscule.

IMG_2989

My breakfast contained:

  • 1/2 container Peach yogurt
  • 1/2 peach
  • 1/4 cup Bear Naked Granola

IMG_2991I didn’t realize how much I relied on my gadgets until this morning. I really felt like I should give up and walk because "nobody would know”. In the end, I realize that walking or giving up cheats nobody but myself!!

Do you rely on your gadgets like I do? Are you one of those Zen runners I am jealous of who just get out there and go for the heck of it?

Off to charge my gadgets! Have a great day! 😉

I <3 Salem Lake

I started this morning off with this Black Cherry Almond CLIF Bar and a glass of fat free organic milk (mmm!!) So yummy. I hadn’t had this flavor before but it was really tasty.

Today’s weather couldn’t have been MORE PERFECT for a long[er] run. The temps were in the low 50s, slight breeze, zero clouds. My mom and I headed out to Salem Lake, my absolute FAVORITE place to run EVER. It was here that I broke my first distance PR. The longest I had run before this was 4.5 miles (this was back in summer 07′). Like yesterday, I had alot of great memories of running here and there is nothing that compares to this in Orlando.

Some pictures along the trail….

Now can you see why I love it here?

I didn’t do to bad either!!

Today’s Run Stats:

  • Distance: 6.74 mi
  • Time: 1 :06:12
  • Average Pace: 9:55 min/mile (with picture taking stops)
  • Average Heart Rate: 167 bpm

As you can see, there was a discrepancy between the trail’s signage and my Garmin. whatev.

After I was all gross and sweaty, it was time to pick Jason (my bf) up from the airport. LOL. He’s used to it. I had not seen him since he left on Friday morning so I was happy to see him. I had fun with out him but its always better when we’re together(like the Jack Johnson song).

We hit up Jason’s Deli for some grub since I was starving, as was Jason.

I couldn’t decide between the Turkey wrap or the tomato basil soup so I got half of each!! It came with fresh fruit, too!! Jason’s deli has the best tomato basil soup I’ve ever tasted (just my opinion)
I smell dinner in the near future… better go help mom out!! Tonight is our last night in North Carolina– tomorrow we hit the road to DC!! Yay for road trips!! See ya later!

Summer is for Swimming and Salads!!

Welcome to summer!! Today feels like my first official day of summer!! Last week I was finishing up finals and doing graduation stuff (not for me) and so the week flew by. Today is the first day I have absolutely zero responsibilities to take care of… its so strange!!

I started my day off wanting to go for a swim. I don’t have a membership to a gym, so I have to just use the little 20 yards or so pool at the apartment complex. I swam laps back and forth for 12 minutes, and then this old guy jumped in and started floating back and forth across the short side of the pool. It was super annoying and I kept going for a few minutes and then once I had to swim like waaaay around him, I realized that this just wasn’t worth it. Oh well that was a long enough swim for me! I don’t actually know HOW to swim, I just act like I know how and ignore people looking at me funny.

Since that didn’t work out too well…. I headed for the downstairs storage area and dusted off the ole’ bike. I brought my new Garmin along and decided to check out the distance of some of my usual running routes.

Sorry it’s so blurry I just think it’s so cool how it does all this stuff.

Bike Stats:

  • Total Distance: 7.2 miles
  • Time: 39:01
  • Average heart rate: 148 bpm
  • Average Pace: 5:25 min/mi

Overall it was pretty enjoyable, even tho its hot as you know what in FL…. After my run I made one of my two favorite salads!!! This is the veggie-riffic one! (the other one is fruity)

Megan’s Veggie-riffic Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

  • one carrot chopped
  • celery chopped
  • 1/2 tomato
  • cucumber slices (on the bottom)
  • some brocoli chopped up
  • reduced fat feta
  • leftover chicken
  • Sliced almonds
  • Newman’s Own Light Balsamic Vinagrette

It’s super delicious, so I thought I would share it!! 🙂

Was I living under a rock or something?

Holy. Cow. Where have I been?? I have been seeing other people (including my one and only OF4L Debz) running with this gizmo known as the Garmin Forerunner. All these fancy features like pace, heart rate, calories burned, and way, wayyyy more all tucked into a little wrist gps gadget. I have been wanting one of these puppies since oh I don’t know… before Christmas!! I asked for one, and got a heart rate monitor instead. Now, I don’t want to complain, I like the heart rate monitor… But this things the bomb. I WANT ONE!!

So my credit card had some rewards points that needed spending… so I took the cash… knowing EXACTLY what I wanted to buy with it. And… tada!! Look what I got last night!!!

I think I squealed when I opened the package… haha. I’m so pumped. All these map analyzing features… its like Distance runner/nerd heaven.

So of COURSE I had to test it out this morning. Me and Debz did a 7.5 mile run where we actually went exploring! I always used to use runnersworld or mapmyrun to figure out where I was going but now I feel like I can go anywhere!!I love seeing all the numbers like pace and heart rate it is so motivating. I’m not quite sure on how to use ALL the features yet… so hopefully I can figure them out.
It looks kinda bulky on my wrist but thats a pretty small computer relatively speaking!

This morning’s run stats are:

  • 7.5 miles
  • 1 hour, 10 mins
  • 10:05 min/mile pace… I don’t think its right tho b/c I forgot to hit stop afterward lol.
  • FUN to the n-th power (gotta show my weird side)

I’m so glad I finally have the Garmin Forerunner. Now I no longer feel as if I am living under a rock so to speak.
