Missing the Gym

A couple of days ago, I wrote about whether or not I should join the local gym. It’s been a week since I have worked out there, and I kind of miss it!

My muscles were starting to feel stronger from the weight lifting, and I felt accomplished when I got a complete workout done before work or school. Running more than about 3.0 miles is just not an option for me right now, and the gym provided new challenges to get me through this non-running phase.

While a lot of people thought that I should just suck it up and work out at the UCF (my free on campus gym), I should mention that I am only on that side of town twice a week, with no time available to go to the gym. It takes 35-45 minutes to get over there, and I’m just not willing to drive that far everyday for a gym.

Looks like I’ll be heading to LA Fitness soon to sign up!

The biggest perk to me is the indoor heated swimming pool. That alone is worth the $30/month, and I can cancel anytime I want to.

I can’t believe how much some of you have to pay for your gyms! Almost $200/month?! Wow! I wonder which city has the most expensive gym prices?

Yesterday was pretty hectic, and I never got around to posting again. I ate some homemade soup that my stepmom made for lunch.

I think she called it Spring soup, and it contained rice, potatoes, spinach, asparagus, onion, and carrots. Probably some other stuff to, but I don’t know.

I also had a bag of pretzels which was actually 2.5 servings, and I didn’t realize it.

I also got my sweet and salty fix with some homemade trail mix. It is cheaper and tastier, and I can throw in whatever I feel like. This mix had cashews, almonds, craisins, golden raisins, and dark chocolate m+m’s.

Later, some green grapes.

I had to eat a quick dinner on campus, so I opted for Subway. I split a $5 footlong with my friend, obviously the cheapest thing I could find on campus. Can’t beat it!

I have a bunch of deadlines, lab reports, and homework assignments to get turned in before spring break starts this weekend!

To Join, or Not?

My two-week Free Gym pass has officially expired. 😦

I feel like I did get a good amount of use out of it, though!

  • I swam 3 times.
  • Weight lifted 4 times.
  • Ran 2 times.
  • Attended 1 yoga class.
  • Used the elliptical machine 1 time.

I decided to go on a run this morning since the weather has finally cleared up. It’s been storming the past few days. I got in a 3.5 mile run, which is about as far as I can go right now. Even that is really pushing it. My knee feels the exact same as it did before I took nearly a  month off.

Before I left, I had a mini CLIF bar. Perfect size for pre-run!

After my run, I came home and made a bowl of pumpkin oatmeal. Wow!

It tasted SO good, but it made a TON! I ate most of it, but I feel stuffed to the brim.

My oatmeal included:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 TBL flax
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin
  • almonds
  • raisins

I am debating whether or not I should join the gym that I have been going to. Trying to be a good decision maker, I made a pros and cons list.

  • The gym is close to my home, and on the way home from work.
  • Swimming pool give a good alternative to running.
  • Friends (Caitlin and Ryan) are members.
  • Free weights and equipment variety. It lets me do things other than what I can do at home.
  • Group exercise classes, like yoga, spinning, and kickboxing.

  • Costs money…Luckily, the gym has no contracts or enrollment fees, but still I don’t know how much is too much to pay for a gym.

I still have the ability to work at UCF’s gym for free, but it’s far from home, always packed, and full of non-serious looking people (aka… flirtation central). I don’t want to wear a full face of make-up and straighten my hair to go work-out. It’s just not my style.

Are you a member of a gym? How much are you willing to pay to workout?

To Join, or not to Join? That is the question.
