Entering the Food Chain: My First Open Water Swim

I’m alive! I made it through my first open water swim!




Aren’t one piece bathing suits so flattering!? Just kidding.


I met Kelly bright and early this morning at Lucky’s Lake in Orlando.




With my first sprint triathlon rapidly approaching, I knew I had to get this open water swim in today. It was now, or never. I felt like it was important to take the surprise element out of the open water swim. I didn’t want to get to the race and panic!




I was a bit nervous about the open water swim. The lake is 500m across, making it a total of 1km swim. Sure, I’ve done that in the pool several times, but open water seemed like a whole different ball game.


I mean, there could be alligators?!




Those are fake… but the fact that there could be alligators in this lake is very real. Florida lakes have their inherent dangers, and by stepping into the water, you are entering the food chain.






I took a deep breath, and dove right in. It was so scary for the first few strokes! Actually, I started freaking out about a quarter of the way out, and had to flip on my back to catch my breath a couple of times. It really wasn’t a big deal, I just turned and did that backstroke for a bit until I felt like I could try again. After the turn-around, I took a few big breaths, and told myself I only had a little bit more to go. It was definitely easier mentally the second half.


The open water was so much different than the pool. I had a bit of trouble keeping in a straight line, and had to keep bobbing my head out of the water to ensure that I was going in the right direction. There also is no way to stop on the sides, stand up and rearrange your goggles or whatever mid-swim. Your only option is to float on your back or dog paddle. However, I think that the open water swim went by much faster, and was really fun!


Kelly stayed with me for all but the very last seconds of the swim. I was grateful to have a buddy within sight to ensure that I wasn’t going to drown without anyone knowing! 😉




We completed the 1km swim in 28 minutes. I was really proud of that time! Next Saturday’s triathlon is only a 750m swim, so I should be good to complete that distance with no problem. Right? 😀


One of the cool things about the Lucky’s Lake swim, is that upon completing the swim, you get to sign the wall!


There are so many names on the wall, that there is only space left on the ceiling!




I found a little place to sign my name. By the way, it’s really hard to write upside down!!

Pretty cool, huh?!


I had a CLIF bar to hold me over while I ran a couple errands with Kelly.




Once I got home, I realized that I had nothing yummy in my apartment, and hit up Chipotle for a salad.




Plus, lime chips and guacamole. I couldn’t eat very many chips, but they make a good snack for later.




I felt very accomplished for completing my first open water swim. I was nervous, but I did it!


I love facing my fears. It makes me feel alive!

Feeling Fishy

I’m now a proud member of LA FITNESS!




After contemplating joining the gym, I decided to go for it. There is really no risk, and I knew that I would be happier joining than complaining about not running.


I started out my gym membership with a swim. I was going to try for 1500 meters, but there were three guys staring at me waiting to take my lane. I ended up doing 1000m in 25 minutes. I felt great, even though I felt rushed.



I hate doing the laundry list of eats, so I’ll try to make it fast.

Lunch was new! I had an Amy’s Vegan Black Bean burrito. I didn’t even miss the meat or cheese! On the side, I had blue chips and salsa.

After my workout, I heated up some leftover fajita chili and made a grilled cheese and spinach sandwich.



I’m eating a brownie as I type.


For some reason, today’s topic of discussion (in the comments section) was my dating life. I have no idea why, considering I never mentioned it. I realize that as a blogger I put myself out there to be scrutinized. However, sometime it feels I’m more like a goldfish in a clear plastic bowl with everyone around just watching and waiting for me to go belly up. I’m not perfect!! Ok, Vent over.

Jump Right In

Life is going swimmingly!




This afternoon, after work, I headed to the gym for a workout. I have 6 days left of my two-week free LA Fitness pass, and I am determined to make the most use out of it as I can.


First up, I hit the pool!




Today was my third swim. Last time, I swam 750 meters. Today I decided to try to go just a bit further. I made my goal 1000 meters and stuck to it. It took me about 25 minutes to complete the 40 laps, but I did it!


I’m in the “newbie” stage, and I am improving exponentially!


A few minutes after I started, Caitlin and Ryan joined in on the swim. Caitlin swam a bit further (1500m) and I’m not sure about Ryan but she is FAST!




After our swim, we hit up the locker room and changed into regular workout clothing. It felt so good to take my one piece suit off. I don’t know whether to feel like I’m at middle school church camp or a hard core athlete. Hmmm…




After my swim, I hit the treadmill for a quick 2 mile run. It took me more effort than a normal run would have, probably because I was already tired from the swim.


Even though I only did 45 minutes of cardio (as opposed to 5 hours during the marathon) but it felt so good. It was challenging to do two types of cardio back to back. I also felt like I was sweating out so much “junk” I’ve been carrying around in my life. Amazing feeling!


Next, I hit the weight room. It has been so long since I did any sort of strength training that I don’t really know what to do. I decided to jump right in!


My workout included:

  • 20 push-ups
  • 3 x 10 Overhead Shoulder Press (8 lb dumbells)
  • 3 x 10 Front Raises (8 lb)
  • 3 x 10 Standing Flyes (8 lb)
  • 2 x 10 Upright Rows (20 lb bar)
  • 3 x 10 Bicep curls (12 lb dumbells)


Basically, I worked out my shoulders and biceps.


It was the best workout I have had in a long while.






Lunch was the same as yesterday: Cheese and crackers with soup, but today was minestrone. (Soup was buy one get one free at Publix!)

It’s Friday night, and I have NO plans. I am so happy about that. This week has been crazy, and I have a lot to catch up on!


Off to find some dinner. I’m hangry!

I Love Mail

Thank Goodness it’s Friday night!


It’s been a busy week, and I’m glad to finally have some time to myself. I spent the afternoon unpacking the last of my boxes. I only have ONE box left to go through, and I saved it for last because most of it’s junk I need to toss.


My eats were not that exciting, so I’ll run through them quickly:


Breakfast eaten at work = Chobani + granola + kiwi + strawberries



Lunch= V8 Butternut Squash soup + black beans + broccoli (The soup tastes MUCH better this way than plain.)




Snacks = Wheat Thin Knock Offs + Apple + PB… YUM!!




(I also had a Pumpkin Pie Kashi bar after swimming.)


Dinner = Spinach salad + Leftover Lasagna that my friends’ Dad made me… random.




I got off work early today, so I headed to the gym for some swimming! It was my second swim, and I have to say that it went well. I tried to swim as far as I could, while keeping good form. I made it just over 750 meters (approximately 25 minutes) , and started getting sloppy. My breathing was weird, and I almost swallowed water. I figured that I got in a good workout, so I called it quits!


Once I got home, I found three lovely birthday gifts in my mailbox!


1. Lululemon Gift card from BFF Debbie! It was a unexpected surprise! I actually don’t own anything from their store, so I’m really excited to go shop!



2.Handmade Salted Caramels from Julie! They are seriously amazing. They remind me of Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate. Dangerous!




3. Homemade Secret Recipe cookies from Lindsey! These things are to die for. SO GOOOOOD!!!!!! She suggested I store them in the freezer so they don’t go stale, but I have a feeling they won’t last that long. 😉




I love getting mail. Other than bills, that is. It always brightens my day!


Time to get ready! A few of my pals are coming over for a housewarming party! Maybe I will post some pictures of the new apartment! 😀

Two Days, Two Challenges

Wow! I feel like so much has happened in the past two days in the exercise world!




I woke up bright and early to start my newest exercise adventure. Did you guess it? Swimming!


Ryan met me at her gym at 6:00 am and spent about an hour going over basic technique and swim strokes. She is an excellent teacher! I have been really looking forward to having her teach me, since all I really knew how to do was flop like a fish.


Honestly, it’s the perfect solution for me. My knee is giving me problems, and swimming doesn’t irritate it at all! It will help me keep my cardiovascular system in shape, and hopefully tone me up a bit! It also will provide me a new challenge, which couldn’t come at a better time. 😉






After my two exams yesterday, I contemplated coming home and crashing. I wasn’t really all that tired.


I decided to try something new! My dad got me an indoor bicycle trainer for Christmas, and I still had not really tried it out. Between the marathon training, recovery, and moving, I just haven’t had the chance.




Basically the back wheel hooks into two slots which you tighten. Then a piece at the bottom of the wheel is adjusted for resistance, so you can make it as intense or easy as you want to. I put it somewhere in between.


I finally tried it out.  I set my bike up facing the TV set, and rode for the length of time of one Sex and the City episode. It’s a pretty sweet set up if you ask me.




(Oh, that’s my new living room… like it? )


I’m on a mission to try as many new forms of exercise as I can, and find a way to make it fun. My goal is to find one new way to move every day this week!
